Wow, what can I say…  I’ve been waiting 8 years to attend the Weddings and Portrait Photographers International convention in Las Vegas…. and I finally had the chance to experience it!  It was amazing! I had the privilege to travel with a close friend, Angela Baron, who has her own business and also wanted to go to WPPI.

I saw numerous speakers and teachers over my six days, and returned so motivated and  excited to put what I learned into my business. I want to highlight a couple of speakers that truly stood out to me, and if you attend WPPI next year you need to check them out. Please excuse my crappy iphone pics… 😉

If you are needing inspiration on the business side of photography… check out Katelyn James….  I thought I liked her work and her amazing talent, but hearing her passion and seeing her in person was inspiring.  She is truly genuine and I really believe she cared about helping my business and teaching us how to improve as photographers.

Ryan Schembri and Rocco Ancora…. need I say more… they did things with light I didn’t know was possible.  So technical, yet doable… the images that were coming straight out of camera was crazy.  No photoshop necessary!!  They also had their fabulous wives there and seeing how they worked as a team was so cool.

Photographing newborns is something you can never stop learning about.  From newborn safety to baby soothing, Kelly Brown had a lot to share, she is such a fabulous newborn photographer.  She’s also an amazingly sweet person and was so open about who she was and where she started.  She was so kind to go over so much, and to teach in such a down to earth manner.

And last, but not least…. Zach and Jody Gray… These two were rockin… they showed us off camera flash and yes…. we actually got to shoot!!!   I find with workshops sometimes it’s hard to try out what is being taught. Both of them were so willing to help and answer any questions.  You have to take their class if you get a chance.  🙂

So why go???   To be inspired, to learn and of course to have fun!  I waited 8 years and it was well worth it.  😀 What would I do different???

3 things I would do different when going back to WPPI…

  1. Stay at the MGM!!!!   If you don’t know the MGM… its a CRAZY, huge hotel!!  We stayed right across the street and it took us at least half hour to get to classes.
  2. Pre plan meet ups… Ang and I wished we could have met more people and mingled more.
  3. Really look into your speakers and teachers, study them and make sure they are a good fit for you and what you want to learn.  😀

Well… after months of waiting to see the allergist after her anaphylactic reaction back in March… we now know that Bryn is anaphylactic to tree nuts…. hazelnuts in particular…. I am quite overwhelmed with this new information and a little unsure of what to do or expect next… how extreme do we go?  How do we proceed?  I have now taken the realization that my house needs to be striped of any nuts, and anything that could be contaminated.  How do I go over to friends houses? Or have my child babysat?  This is a new normal and being educated and prepared will be my focus.

This week has been a hard week, being a mom to three little girls takes time, work and so much energy.  I love them more then anything!  I have had a lot of Q’s about what had happened yesterday so here’s the details….yesterday was so hard for me, seeing your child in danger or distress makes you crazy as a mother, enough to come out of your skin.  It was like any other day, going to put my baby (who is almost three) down for a nap… I heard her ask to go to the potty and when she got up I noticed her eye puffy and purple… I wasn’t sure what was going on but decided I should go to the dr… when I arrived at the drs we were waiting in the drs office and she was getting worse… hives all over her body, both eyes looked puffy and her breathing was shallow and she had a cough they had just developed.

I told the front desk my concern and they rushed me back to see the dr, and the dr knew right away she was having an anaphylactic reaction to something.  My heart jumped into my throat, tears filled my eyes.  They instantly saw my panic and reassured me that the situation was serious but that she would be ok.  I had to hold my tiny, little girl in my arms while they gave her a shot of Epinephrine and a shot of Benadryl.  Immediately after she started to breath easier and the swelling started to go down.  911 had been dispatched and the ambulance rushed us to the hospital, there she had to be watched, and IV put in… just incase she needed immediate medication.  The first IV didn’t go in so the other hand got it too… poor girl, she was so upset from all the needles she fell asleep.  After four hours of observation we were good to go home, all the swelling gone and she looked herself.

Now we have a new perspective and new reality, the unknown of what caused this anaphylactic reaction.  Making me more sensitive and aware of allergies that are very serious and dangerous.  Now I carry an epipen in my purse, and will be watching her like a hawk until allergy tests are done.  I’m hoping that the tests will tell us what she ate or what to stay away from, however I may find out nothing.  Well, thats the whole story!!  Thank you to everyone who prayed, commented, and sent us warm thoughts they are all appreciated.  Love you all.

Five years ago my life changed, five years ago I became a mother. I had a baby girl and we named her Hadley. I can’t even describe my feelings when I think about this gorgeous girl and how she went from a sweet little baby to this little preschooler who sings, dances, and loves to dress up like a princess! If you haven’t met Hadley, I know you will want to after all I have to say. She loves her sisters, and takes care of them like a little mother. She is very musical, singing and dancing are two of her many talents. She’s extremely caring, generous and loving, and I am so blessed to have her in my life.

Here’s a sneak peek of her birthday photo shoot… there will be more following. A friend of mine  (also a photographer) started doing birthday shoots with her kids and I thought it was brilliant. So each year on each of my girl’s birthdays, they get a little shoot and they get to feel extra special!

I just love this beautiful girl!

I never win anything… ever!  Well I decided to enter a photo contest at the It’s my wedding bridal show at the Tradex, and I won!! I am so excited!!! YAY!!!!

Thanks to It’s my wedding, looking forward to next year!

This might be one of my favourites of the year!!!

Ready for a fresh start, I am going into 2013 with goals, exciting news, and a whole new business strategy and marketing materials! I’m excited to be jumping back into blogging, keeping you updated, and finding new products to offer.  2012 was filled with so many amazing  things…. new branding with a gorgeous new website, upgraded my camera, 22 incredible brides, meeting so many families, and snuggling new babies…. I could go on and on…
I have been so blessed in 2012 and now am very excited to see what 2013 brings!!!!

My sweet girl turned three, time goes by so quickly.  I like to take the girls out on their birthday’s and have a special photo shoot with just the two of us and they love it!!  She wore her new birthday outfit and since the weather was gorgeous we ventured out and got some amazing shots.

Happy birthday my beautiful Pressy, I love you more then anything in this world.  I am so proud to call you mine.

I just love this baby, my Brynny B turns one today!!!!  It’s so bitter sweet as she may be our last child….. might be….  😉  I’m so excited to celebrate her birthday with all of our friends and family.  After looking back on the year there have been so many memories, finding her voice…( more like screaming), learning to crawl, how she did NOT like eating rice cereal and moved stright to finger foods, and so much more.

To my sweet B, you have brought us so much joy in this first year with you.  I can’t wait to watch you grow and change into a toddler and a little girl.  Your sisters love you and you are one tough baby being carried around by Hadley… even though mommy says she’s not allowed.  Thank you for being my baby, I wish you’d never grow up.

All the mommas out there, if you have children… hug, squeeze and kiss them because they only stay tiny for so long.

This last weekend was such an amazing experience.  I was chosen by Jasmine Star to attend her course on how to shoot an editorial wedding at CreativeLIVE.  My hubby and I put together a submission video, where we rapped, and we actually got picked!!!!!  I was shocked and amazed!!!  I had all sorts of emotions running through me, excitment, nerves, and a hunger to learn.  My hubs and I drove down to Seattle, just the two of us. Our moms graciously took our girls for the weekend so we were able to have some time without kids for a couple days.  I have been watching CreativeLIVE for a while now so winning was exhilarating for me, it was exciting getting to meet all the crew and just being part of the action.  The first day I was so nervous I could have thrown up, getting to know the other photographers, the crew, cameras, and just a whole new experience.  We got together with Jasmine for breakfast and meeting her was great, her and JD were so nice and genuine.  After some eats we headed to cL and got it started, I learned so much that first day… I can’t even re cap everything because my brain will explode and if you really want to know you can buy the full three days for $149….  steal of a deal by the way…. 😉 I just can’t even explain how incredible each and every day was, and the food they served at lunch was sooooo yummy!  The crew eats well, Thai, and Greek food… YUM!  Two of my fav  dishes.  Hosts Kenna and LaRae are two of the sweetest people, and I love the way they run the show… my favorite Kenna line…. “Hello internet!” Awesome!  I know this is choppy, but I just can’t stop thinking of all these great moments.  Overall an amazing experience.  Now I have a few words to say to J*, J* Primes and cL……

CreativeLIVE, THANK YOU!!!  I am so honoured and blessed to have met each and every one of you!  I have made new friends and you all are so friendly and kind.  I have never been in any sort of production like this and you all rocked it and made us all feel so comfortable.

J* Primes….. I love you guys!  You are all so wonderful.  I had fun shooting, dancing, laughing, and yes shedding some tears too.  I know we will all keep in touch and will keep each other accountable.  I can’t wait to watch our businesses grow!!

This group is amazing so go and check them and “Like” their Facebook pages!!!  Actually LOVE them!!!!!!  Ashley Barnett, Mark Nabong, Brittany Morgan, Michelle Lange, and last but not least John Cain Sargent.

Jasmine, thank you.  Thank you for choosing me.  This was such a cool experience, and I am so blessed to have shared this with you!  Every day you exceeded my expectations and made me want to become a better photographer.  You are such a lovely person and you give all that you have to teach others.  Thank you again from the bottom of my heart.

Well, it’s time to rock it out!!!  I have some exciting news…. a new Ashley Martens Photography is coming!!!  A complete overhaul… branding, website, packaging, blog make over, and more!!!!  Keep checking back, I can’t wait to show you where my business is going!

Ok, I love baking…. well….kind of, I love to eat it!   I have this new tradition, have a cup of Vanilla Earl Grey with a cookie.  So I have found this perfect recipe the doesn’t require soft butter (I never have it on hand), Ginger Crinkles.  YUM!  It is the easiest cookie recipe I have found, it only makes two dozen so it’s really easy to whip up with out taking hours to bake them.  If you know me, I not the best baker… usually I forget an ingredient or burn them.  This one I think I have perfected….  lol!  Check them out, and try them yourself!

  • 2/3 cup cooking oil
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tbsp molasses
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • extra sugar to coat

Mix together wet ingredients and in a separate bowl mix in the dry ingredients.  Add the dry to the wet, mix well.  Shape into 1 inch balls.  Roll in sugar and place onto baking sheet.  Bake in oven at 350 degrees F for 8-10 Mins.  Enjoy!!!
